Here’s a list of websites and organizations we love almost as much as we love elephants:
Save the Elephants | http://savetheelephants.org
These guys are the pioneers and frontrunners of the elephant conservation movement, which is why we donate our profits to SET.
The Elephant Watch Portfolio | http://elephantwatchportfolio.com
This company runs a handful of camps that you can stay at if you’re on safari in Africa. We’ve stayed at their flagship camp, Elephant Watch, and it was downright magical.
The David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust | https://www.sheldrickwildlifetrust.org
This trust is focused on protecting Africa’s wilderness, especially rhinos and elephants. They have an elephant orphanage in Nairobi, Kenya.
That’s right: an orphanage for baby elephants.
And get this:
It is common for ex-orphans now living wild to return and take one of the “Juniors” off for a trial Night-Out in the wild, and also not uncommon for the aspiring graduate to feel daunted and insecure without human protection during the hours of darkness. If so, he or she is escorted back during the night (usually by a couple of the ex-orphaned bulls) and handed back to the Keepers again to return to the security of the orphanage.
Now that just makes my thug heart melt a little bit.
